"Blood relations and bonds of love are not the same; bonds of love are made..." Once again, Karan Johar brings the spice of family into the realms of love, romance, and affection. This time, he attempts to convey some serious social messages as well.
Individuals with diverse personalities are attracted to each other. This is a notion we have heard many times, and Karan Johar has made it the foundation of his story. On one side, there's Rocky, a colorful, lively, and business-oriented Punjabi guy from a renowned family. On the other side, we have Rani, an educated Bengali television news anchor from South Delhi. They meet with a twist of fate and fall in love in just a few encounters. Since their families oppose this relationship, they plan to live in each other's homes for three months before taking the relationship to marriage.
The story unfolds with the entry of Rocky Randhawa (played by Ranveer Singh), accompanied by catchy songs, taking us into Karan Johar's colorful, glamorous, entertaining, and melodramatic world. The Randhawa family is a big business family known for their sweets all over Delhi. Besides Rocky, the family includes grandparents, parents, and a sister. Dadi (played by Jaya Bachchan) is the head of the household, and the entire family and business revolve around her. However, Dada (played by Dharmendra) suffers from memory loss and remembers only one name, Jamini Chattopadhyay (played by Shabana Azmi). In an effort to connect him with his old love, Rocky meets Rani Chattopadhyay (played by Alia Bhatt), who is Jamini's granddaughter. As Rocky and Rani come closer while trying to unite their old love, their two different families become the biggest test of their love.
The film also touches on the clash of cultures and personalities. It shows how people can be critical of each other. One character in the movie says, "If we keep canceling each other out, we'll never understand anyone!"
Ranveer Singh fully embodies the character of Rocky Randhawa. He delivers witty one-liners with ease and portrays emotional scenes with grace. His performance blends eccentricity with sensitivity, and Ranveer does it splendidly. Alia Bhatt impresses with her emotional scenes, but at times, she goes over the top. Jaya Bachchan's portrayal of the matriarch of the Randhawa family is stern, and that's her victory. Her confrontation with Rani or Rani's father (played by Tota Roy Chowdhury) will also leave you angry. Shabana Azmi has lived her character to perfection, and Dharmendra shines in his small yet impactful role. Amir Bashir, Namit Das, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Churni Ganguly, and Kshitee Jog are commendable in their roles.
Karan Johar's Films
Karan Johar's films are always expected to be entertaining and visually appealing, and Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani succeeds in that aspect. The grand sets, mesmerizing locations, colorful costumes - all captivate your attention. The film has romance, emotion, comedy, and drama, but it falls short of delving deep into the heart. The reason behind this is the screenplay. Written by Ishita Moitra, Shashank Khaitan, and Sumit Roy, the story or the experiences of the characters don't get enough time to sink in. There's a lack of depth in some portions, and at times, the film goes over the top. Karan Johar, through this film, attempts to address paternalism, gender bias, female prejudices, and body shaming. But he doesn't make the story overly preachy or didactic, which is a good thing. Nithin Baid's editing could have been a bit tighter, especially in the first half, which feels stretched. Manush Nandan's cinematography makes the film visually strong.
Music
In Karan Johar's films, music has always been an important and integral part. "Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani" goes above average in this regard. The music of the film is composed by Pritam, with lyrics written by Amitabh Bhattacharya. They have tried to keep the album a mix of different genres - a romantic track, a dance number, and a heart-wrenching song. "Tum Kya Mile," "Jhumka," "Ve Kamleya," and "Dhindoora Baje Re" all look beautiful on the screen. However, the songs may not stay with you for a long time.
Rating
Karan Johar's film "Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani" has a lot of drama, romance, family, emotions, and some social messages. However, it lacks the emotional depth that could have made it touch the heart. From FilmyBite, the film gets 3 stars.
